Twelve year-old Annie Inoue is a daughter of Japanese immigrants, growing in Topeka, Kansas during the 1980s. Her teachers have always told her and her classmates, “You can be anything you want to be!” And Annie believes them 100 percent. Annie dreams often and she dreams BIG. She wants to slam dunk her way to the NBA and star in a local theater production. There’s even a cute fellow thespian she has her eye on. But things keep getting in the way of her achieving her dreams. Through Annie’s experiences, this story explores issues of appropriation, racism, privilege and whether the American dream applies to everyone.
